The 26th of August is National Dog Day, and by now, my readers know that I am a devoted dog parent and that my furry children play a crucial role in my life. No one can win hearts like man’s best friend, and we celebrate National Dog Day in honor of this bond between humans and canines.
Take the time to appreciate the love that dogs bring to our daily lives, and consider doing your bit for homeless and abused animals in your community. Our canine friends do a lot for us. They keep us safe, work for emergency services, and support people who are blind, deaf, or otherwise disabled. This is an opportunity to give something back!
There are countless ways to celebrate National Dog Day, each as unique as the dogs themselves. Whether it's adopting a dog from a rescue organization, pampering your furry friend at a pet salon, or donating to a local animal shelter, every act of kindness counts. Even something as simple as buying your dog a new toy can make a difference!
Ten years ago, my husband and I decided to adopt our foster dog, an American White Shepherd. She came to us at four years old, highly pregnant, and soon gave birth to nine healthy little pups in the middle of our living room. While we did our best to provide the pups with a good start in life, and all of them have found their fur-ever homes in the meantime, mama's adoption fell through. So, she returned to us for another round of fostering, which eventually turned into a foster failure. She's enjoyed life alongside her two furry sisters without a worry about where her next meal would come from or if she would have a warm place to sleep at night.
The National Dog Day Foundation supports all sorts of dog breeds and varieties. It discourages everyone from purchasing a puppy from unethical backyard breeders and puppy mills and instead supports adoption from animal rescue organizations and reputable breeders.
On this National Dog Day, let's not only celebrate the love and joy that our furry companions bring to our lives but also remember those who are less fortunate. By spending quality time with our dogs and supporting those in need, we can truly honor the spirit of this special day and show our compassion for all dogs, especially those who are homeless or abused.
