Over the past few days, I've bid farewell to yet another successful year as an author, and welcomed 2019 with much fanfare and lots of bubbly. Can you believe another year has come and gone? Where did the time go?
To start of the new year, I dug into my stats, to see which of last years' posts were most popular and recap all that I've accomplished on this crazy writing journey of mine.
And so, without further ado, here are my most popular blog posts for 2018, chosen by you, the readers:
A Look Back - Top Ten Posts for 2018
As most of my readers already know, I'm in the midst of editing my next historical fiction piece A Life in the Shadow of the Crown. With that in mind, I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to share some tips and tricks that help me along the way to polish my manuscript...
Yes, I know I should be writing more posts about my journey as a writer, and pass on my writing experiences to others. However, sometimes life throws a large stick in-between the spokes of your wheels, which then demands most of your attention unless you want to fall on your face. And such a stick was thrown at us a few months ago when our beloved fur-baby "Zoey" became gravely ill...
First of all, what is a chronological error? Well, a chronological error or anachronism is defined as an error in time placement. For example, a sword is an anachronism in modern warfare, referencing the EU in a story set in Victorian times, or mentioning breeds of domesticated animals such as Rhodesian Ridgebacks during the reign of Alexander the Great as this dog breed was not established until the 19th century are all chronological errors. It is therefore advisable to do proper research to avoid such faux pas...
A while back, I met an aspiring writer, named Peggy, at a local pet supplies store (I spend a lot of time there....what can I say, I love to shop for my furry children!) who asked me several questions regarding my writing but this one stood out...
Writing a book takes many hours and dedication. Often it takes an author away from their loved ones. Most writers get paid much less than you might think; most of them write because they love to tell a story. The one or two dollars they make in royalties per book barely buys that next cup of coffee that fuels the next chapter...
As long as I can remember I’ve always admired writers who can crank out thousands of words per day. When writing was merely my hobby, I often struggled to carve out time to write in between my day job, family, and life in general. But since writing has developed into something more I've learned that developing a daily writing habit helps to 1) make more money with your writing, 2) consistently produce quality content, and ultimately 3) achieve your writing goals...
A few weeks ago I received a private FB message from an aspiring writer named Jennifer who asked: “I just graduated from high school and will start college this autumn, and I've been contemplating making writing a career. I just love to write, but I also know that a writing career can be rough, so I'm not sure if I would make it in the publishing world. Can you give me some advice? I don't know what to do.”...
When I am out and about at events or appointments, people usually ask about my occupation as part of our small talk. When I mention that I am a writer, and I am working on my third historical fiction piece after writing and publishing several non-fiction books, I often get the question “So, what’s life like as a published author?” As if my life is supposed to differ dramatically from others in a very particular way...
When publishing a book, the moment of truth is simply inevitable. After all, it is the moment that you have anxiously awaited and probably even dreamed about. The printed proof copy of your book has finally arrived on your doorstep! That just happened to me…my newest historical fiction novel A LIFE IN THE SHADOW OF THE CROWN and my recipe book 'TIS THE SEASON FOR CHRISTMAS COOKIES showed up on my door step just a couple of weeks ago. I'm just giddy with excitement...
You're a writer, and without a doubt, you keep a copy of every story you've written. I'm sure you have plenty of files filled with fantastic story ideas, outlines, and descriptions. More than likely you also maintain a collection of great punch lines and unique character names scribbled on sticky notes, along with folders overflowing with printed versions of stories in numerous stages of editing...
