This Sunday, the 26th of August is National Dog Day, and by now my readers know that I am an devoted dog parent, and my furry children play a most important role in my life. No one can win hearts like man’s best friend and in honour of this bond between human and canine, we celebrate Dog Day.
Take the time to appreciate the love that dogs bring to our daily lives and consider doing your bit for homeless and abused animals in your community. Our canine friends do a lot for us. They keep us safe, work for emergency services, and support people who are blind, deaf or otherwise disabled. This is an opportunity to give something back!
Ways to celebrate National Dog Day vary widely, from adopting a dog from a rescue organization to giving your furry friend a spa treatment at the pet salon. Donating blankets and food to a nearby animal shelter, or buying your canine companion a new toy or two or even ten, also seems popular!
It was only two years ago when my husband and I decided to adopt our foster dog, an American White Shepherd. She came to us three years ago, highly pregnant and soon gave birth to nine healthy little pups in the middle of our living room. While we did our best to give the pups a good start in life, and all of them have found their fur-ever homes in the meantime, mama's adoption fell through. So, she was returned to us for another round of fostering, which eventually turned into a foster failure. Now, she's enjoying life alongside her two furry sisters, without a worry where her next meal will come from or if she will have a warm place to sleep at night.
The National Dog Day Foundation supports all sorts of breeds and varieties of dogs. They discourage everyone from purchasing a puppy from unethical backyard breeders and puppy mills, but instead, support adoption from animal rescue organizations and reputable breeders.
So, celebrate your furry companions today, and their wide-ranging talents, by spending quality time with them, and by supporting dogs in need!
