About a year and a half ago I published a post entitled "Increase Your Emotional Vocabulary", and since it was quite a hit, I decided a second part, with emphasis on negative feelings, was in order. As writers it is vital to be precise with our characters emotional state of mind; the words Mad, Sad, and Afraid are just not enough at times. Increase your emotional vocabulary with this handy list! But please keep in mind that you should not replace one word with another just because it sounds better. It must also suit the situation.
Afraid:
-apprehensive -concerned -defensive -frazzled -frightened -insecure -panicked -petrified -scared -shocked -tense -terrified -uneasy -weary -worried
Annoyed:
-aggravated -dismayed -disgruntled -displeased -exasperated -frustrated -impatient -irritated
Angry:
-enraged -furious -incensed -irate -livid -outraged
Aversion:
-animosity -appalled -contempt -disgust -dislike -hate -repulsed
Confused:
-ambivalent -baffled -bewildered -dazed -lost -mystified -perplexed -puzzled
Disconnected:
-alienated -aloof -bored -detached -distant -indifferent -numb -withdrawn
Embarrassed:
-ashamed -chagrined -flustered -guilty -mortified -self-conscience
Fatigued:
-burnt out -depleted -exhausted -lethargic -listless -sleepy -tired -worn out
Sad:
-depressed -dejected -despair -disappointed -discouraged -disheartened -forlorn -gloomy -hopeless -unhappy -wretched
Tense:
-anxious -cranky -distressed -distraught -on edge -irritable -nervous -overwhelmed -stressed out
Vulnerable:
-fragile -guarded -helpless -insecure -reserved -sensitive
Yearning:
-envious -jealous -longing -pining -wistful
